Olafur Eliasson @ ARoS

I was woken up at 5am this morning by our eldest, he does not sleep much and when he is up, the day starts right there. We decided to remove him from a school that had failed him and now he is home educated while we figure out where to go and what to do, so we are literally living in each others pockets. In the small hours before everyone else wakes up, there is plenty of time to ponder and worry.

Then an email lands into my inbox which may change everything. After the rainiest year since records began here in Devon, suddenly there it is, a rainbow.

Olafur Eliasson is one of my favourite artists, he creates spectacular large scale installations which you experience by being inside them. He has built a circular 150 metre long walkway above the rooftop of ARoS, the museum of modern art in Aarhus. You can walk along the panoramic three metre wide walkway and see the entire city and bay through the colours of the rainbow.

Eliasson describes his project:

”Your rainbow panorama enters into a dialogue with the existing architecture and reinforces what is already given, namely views of the city. I have created a space which virtually erases the boundaries between inside and outside – where people are a little unsure as to whether you have stepped into a work or into part of the museum. This uncertainty is important to me because it encourages people to think and sense beyond the dimensions, they are used to commit themselves in.”

Life is weird sometimes. And Rainbow School would be a good name for a brand new school.

New Nordic: Muuto

I am so excited about these guys. Muuto is a Scandinavian design firm producing some awesome furniture, lighting and home accessories. The pieces continue the Scandinavian design aesthetic; functional and individual, cohesive and considerate. The result is a modern collection that is absolutely everyday usable in a family home, the pieces are warm and, what’s the Danish word? Hyggelig! I am coveting the hand carved Raw Chair, doesn’t it look amazing in green? Rustic and totally contemporary at the same time. I also want the Around coffee tables in grey.*Sigh* The Stacked Shelving storage system is a modular system of blocks that can be arranged in any which way on the floor or on a wall, with various colours. It’s like a sculpture and perfect for displaying your favourite things.

One of the designers in the Muuto team, the Finn Harri Koskinen, says this about new Scandinavian design:

”Great designers and artists are always individuals. In Scandinavia we are generally brought up with enough mental space to explore our individuality, but at the same time keep in mind that we should give back to society. I believe that this duality has been one of the driving forces behind the best of Scandinavian design and will be so in the future.”

I was immediately drawn to their name which is derived from the Finnish word for ‘change’ – muutos – minus the ‘s’. My heart skipped a beat to find that they are based in Copenhagen,  providing more proof that my obsession with Nordic design needs to be taken a step further. Actually, the move to Denmark we are planning is because of husband’s work (at least that is the official party line) but the fringe benefits are considerable. One word: shopping. Ok one more: design. We are planning to move to Aarhus in Denmark this summer for at least a year, as husband’s firm is based there and running global Skype conferences out of his garden shed here in the deepest darkest Devon wearing double merino layers is not ideal. Plus we need a change. I need to be closer to home, and closer to the snow in the winter, and live in a community for a while where there are cafes, shops, restaurants and culture. This is exciting.
